take that weeds.

so, i feel a little guilty.
we are going to till, then re-seed the lawn.
and there are a TON of weeds, seriously, more than grass.
so, obviously i need to kill the weeds before we till.
.
well, i went to the store, and bought weed killer, it kills the weeds, not the grass.
i used it in the front yard, and there were like 50 warnings on the label, not to mention
that dogs & kids can't go in the yard til it dries.
after i sprayed it, not only did the whole neighorhood smell like chemicals, but even after
i washed my hands 40x, they still smelled like chemicals.
.
i felt so guilty. i may have even killed a pidgeon, or mutated its baby.
the pidgeon landed on the grass, and i started yelling "get away, you are landing on chemicals that could kill you" and i was chasing it... it probably thought i was just nuts, but i was really trying to save its life. it just flew away.
.
anyways, so that was just the front yard.
then i decide i just can't so it anymore,
so i get info from my friend and the internet.
.
for just $3.00 I made enviro/kid/dog safe weed killer, that i think works even faster than the
20-million chemical kind.
.
buy a big thing of vinegar.
buy a big thing of salt (the round can thing of morters).
.
pour out just enough vinegar to be able to add all the salt in
squirt several tablespoons of dishsoap (not detergent) (i used seventh gen).
.
shake it up.
put it in a spray thing.
apply to lawn/weeds.
ONLY TO what you want to kill though, b/c it will kill grass too. so it's extra good for weeds coming out of the driveway cracks.
.
smells fine, washed hands, smells fine, isn't killing anybody/thing, cheap.

oooh! i love this idea!

i was listening to you bet your garden on NPR and it was saying it is easier to get rid of weeds by just helping your grass grow big and strong and snuff out the weeds by taking over. however, i think they still recommend lots of watering and fertilizer, so not really all that "green" but maybe better than chemical KILLER. :)

I'm just not a very diligent lawn maintenance kind of girl. I hate when people water their lawn (esp. in july and august!). We have had rain everyday for a week and there are still people in our neighborhood watering and last night our neighbor was HOSING OFF HIS DRIVEWAY. it was all i could do to not say something.

oh, thank GOD for this tip. we really only have a tiny patch of dirt, but it's constantly overrun with weeds and I've been afraid to plant anything in it because of the return of the weeds. I'm going to try this a few times to prep the area for future growth!

Keep up the gardening tips! I'm having difficulty finding plants that can survive the crazy weather here. Windy, mostly cold, foggy. Sometimes sunshine...mostly just overcast? REALLY windy?
